GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - There were 26 arrests made by Graaff-Reinet SAPS last week, and a number of convictions secured.
Most important, one person was arrested for murder, and four for assault GBH. There were also two suspects arrested for theft.
One suspect was arrested in each of the following categories: theft and malicious damage to property, assault (common), housebreaking and theft, and possession of tik. Further arrests were made for contravening a protection order, crimen injuria, and on a warrant of arrest.
For lesser offences, six suspects were arrested for traffic offences, four for being drunk and disorderly, and two for drinking in public.
Eleven people were convicted and sentenced in Graaff-Reinet.
In drug-related crimes, two suspects received suspended sentences. For possession of dagga, the sentence was three months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, and for possession of Mandrax, the suspect was sentenced to a fine of R1 500 or three months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.
For fraud, a sentence of six months’ imprisonment, or a fine of R3 000 was handed down.
Two accused in a case of house robbery were each sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment.
On charges of kidnapping and assault, the sentence was 18 months’ imprisonment on the first count, and 12 months’ imprisonment on the second count.
Another suspended sentence, of nine years’ imprisonment suspended for five years, was handed down to a person convicted of culpable homicide.
For theft out of a motor vehicle, a crime which is becoming increasingly common, and sentence of 18 months imprisonment, with no option of a fine, was handed down. A case of domestic violence led to a sentence of three years’ imprisonment, suspended for three years.
A suspect found guilty of theft was sentenced to a fine of R3 000 or three months’ imprisonment, whereas in another theft case, both of the accused were sentenced to six months’, suspended for three years.
Two convictions were reported from Willowmore. One person was fined R300 for possession of dagga – this has been paid. The other case, of housebreaking and theft, led to a sentence of 24 months’ imprisonment, suspended for four years.
Included in this week’s confiscations are a security gate, liquor, a washing machine, a motor vehicle, wire and pliers, a bicycle, and 18 tik straws.
