GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - There were 25 arrests for minor crimes in Graaff-Reinet last week: ten people for being drunk and disorderly, seven for drinking in public, and eight for traffic violations.
In the more serious category, there were 17 suspects arrested in total.
Five of these were for assault GBH, and two for common assault. For robbery, and theft, there were two suspects arrested for each crime, and a further three for theft from a motor vehicle.
One person was arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property, and two under warrants of arrest.
One Mobicell cellphone and a set of Ford Bantam keys were confiscated.
Several convictions were secured in the Graaff-Reinet court, including two which involved custodial sentences.
The accused in a housebreaking case was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, and for assault GBH, a sentence of two years’ imprisonment was handed down. Neither was given the option of a fine.
The other three convictions all involved suspended sentences.
For shoplifting, the sentence was two years, suspended for three years, with the accused being declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The sentence for theft was a fine of R2 000 or three months’ imprisonment, suspended for three years, and for illegal possession of dagga, the accused was sentenced to a fine of R1 000 or three months’ imprisonment, also suspended for three years.
