GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Despite many warnings issued to the public concerning banking fraud, two cases were reported in Graaff-Reinet last week.
The first happened at the FNB ATM in Church Street.
Just after 08:00 on 7 December, a man went to draw money from the ATM. When he put his card in the machine, it requested him twice to enter his pin and cell phone number, which he did, but he received no money.
While this was happening, there were two other men also at the bank, one withdrawing money and the other standing behind the victim. One of the men tried to assist the victim, but unsurprisingly without success. The victim then waited for the bank to open to request assistance. A member of the bank’s staff then informed the man that an amount of R1 370 had been withdrawn from his account by e-wallet.
The second victim fell for a scam when he was contacted by someone claiming to be from car dealership to whom he needed to make a payment, informing him that their bank account details had changed. The man then deposited an amount of R84 825 into the new account, as requested by the supposed dealership.
He was later informed by Nedbank that they did not receive the payment, and that the account was fraudulent. This incident occurred on 29 November at about 08:38.
These two incidents serve to reinforce warnings issued by SAPS that customers at ATMs should be alert at all times, and never accept help from strangers.
In an instance like the second case, the recommended action would be to phone the dealership back to confirm the change in banking details.
