KAROO NEWS - Sixteen illegal hunting suspects were arrested on the farm Gruisheuwel, in the Hofmeyr district, on Sunday.
Carcasses of 11 springbuck and one steenbuck, which had been hunted using dogs and knives, were found in the men’s possession.
The arrest of the suspects was a team effort, and Alfons van Niekerk of the Rural Safety Management Committee of Agri EC was full of praise for the dedicated work of all, especially the Hofmeyr police.
According to Captain Lariane Jonker, spokesperson for Cradock SAPS, the suspects are aged between 23 and 48 years old. They were arrested by an official from the Department of Environmental Affairs from Komani.
The men were transferred to the holding cells at Cradock police station, their phones taken and vehicles confiscated.
The 32 dogs were taken to the SPCA in Komani.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Hofmeyr Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (May 26).
