GRAAFF-REINET POLITICAL NEWS - The Democratic Alliance's candidate for Ward 2 is Ricardo Smith, a local businessman who is Graaff-Reinet born and bred.
He attended Lingcom Primary School and started his secondary school career at Spandau Secondary, before completing his schooling in Port Elizabeth.
Smith cut his teeth in the business world working for his father for a few years, then opened a spaza shop, managed a nightclub of which he was part owner, and started a taxi business.
He currently is manager of a games centre for children in Kroonvale.
He has been very involved in community work for the past nine years. He was a member of the Independent Community Concern Group as a volunteer for four years, and has represented the business sector on the ward 5 Ward Committee for the past five years.
As Branch Chairperson of the DA in ward 5, and both the Constituency Chair and Fundraising Chair for the DA in the DBNLM, Smith has shown his commitment to both his party and constituents.
He currently runs three soup kitchens, with sponsors, and has just initiated a project whereby he has given 25 unemployed people fishing rods to use to the dam. Smith also serves on the local clinic committee, and is the Deputy Chairperson of the Kroonvale Primary School SGB.
Smith lives in Kroonvale with his partner of 18 years, and they have five children and one grandson.
