GRAAFF-REINET BUSINESS NEWS - Patrick Norman, an experienced teacher, will be opening a training college for security guards during 2019.
Patrick trained at Lovedale College in Alice, and started his teaching career at Ntama Primary in Bedford in January 1980. He then moved to Graaff-Reinet in 1985, where he joined the staff of Isibane Primary school.
A promotional move to principal of Lesley Mankayi Primary School in Adendorp followed in 1987, and two years later, Patrick was appointed principal of Clover Field Primary at Mortimer. In 1995 he was involved with the reopening of Adendorp Primary School.
A change in career followed, and in 1998 Patrick started working for insurance companies, including Sanlam, African Life and Metropolitan Life.
The enthusiasm for teaching did not leave him, however, and in May 2002 he joined the staff of the ABET Spandau Centre in Graaff-Reinet.
His next project is to start Norman Security Centre this year. The Centre will train students from grade 8 to grade 12.
"Training, unfortunately, will not be free, as we have to pay salaries to educators, pay rent, make copies for each lesson and buy electricity for the Centre and to print certificates for those who passed" explained Patrick.
Lessons will take place from 13:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. Training will be for grades E.C.D, with firearm training on request. Pupils from outside Graaff-Reinet will also be accepted.
Employment will be created for ten teachers who are currently unemployed, and five matriculants will also be trained to be educators.
Patrick would like to appeal to residents of Graaff-Reinet and surrounding towns for donations in the form of office equipment. These donations can be dropped at the Methodist Church Hall in Umasizakhe, Graaff-Reinet.
