BUSINESS NEWS - On Saturday 12 April, the Jan Rupert Art Centre opened its doors to art enthusiasts for the much-anticipated exhibition opening of AbstRacT - Synchrony Revealed, a selling group exhibition that explores the connection between nature, abstraction and artistic interpretation.
The journey to Synchrony Revealed began in 2024, when the centre hosted AbstRacT - the Hidden Synchrony, with Oscar Forel's photo series Synchromies as main feature.
Forel's close-up photographs of tree bark transformed the familiar into bold abstract compositions, sparking a dialogue with modern South African paintings from the Rupert and Rembrandt van Rijn Art Foundation collections. Viewers were invited to discover hidden patterns, unexpected synchronies, and moments of wonder.
Building on this creative momentum and dialogue, contemporary South African artists Karla Nixon and Strijdom van der Merwe were invited to create new works inspired by the selection.
The third open call received over 300 entries, making this instalment's response the biggest to date, and 43 artists were selected to showcase their work in this latest exhibition.
At the core of Synchrony Revealed are the cycles of life - selections, eliminations and emphasis on the wonders of ecology.
The artists either interpreted the physical and organic material, or presented some abstracted views that connect subjects and themes in different spheres.
The pieces reveal the artists' exploration of accidental occurrences, demonstrating precision, intuition, structure and elements of play. The synchrony is created by bringing together these ideas, forms and shapes into a single exhibition space.
