GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - General practitioner Dr Mariska Venter is excited to be back in Graaff-Reinet to serve her hometown community. Dr Venter, who matriculated from Hoër Volkskool in 2002, is opening her GP practice's doors this coming Monday, 13 March.
She started her career in healthcare as a psychology student at NMMU, graduating with a BPsych degree (cum laude).
Here, she also received an academic excellence award as the best graduate in the faculty of health sciences.
She then went on to further her studies at NWU in Potchefstroom where she completed her Masters degree in Clinical Psychology (cum laude), as well as her PhD which focused on cancer treatment.
She spent four years working as a clinical psychologist in private practice before deciding to further her studies to become a medical doctor.
Dr Venter completed her medical degree at the University of Pretoria graduating with an MBChB (cum laude). Her internship years were spent working in Port Elizabeth.
She completed her community service year at Murraysburg Hospital before deciding to take the leap to private practice.
She strongly believes in continuous professional development and has completed additional training on topics such as hypnotherapy, advanced cardiac life support, advanced trauma life support and aesthetic medicine.
Asked about her plans for the practice she says, "I'm excited to be back in the Karoo. This is where I belong. When I started on this journey nine years ago, I always hoped it would lead me back here. While I no longer work as a clinical psychologist, I do believe that my experience in this field will be invaluable. "My focus now will be that of a general practitioner.
"As a GP I'll focus on the management of acute and chronic medical conditions, injuries, wound management, minor surgical procedures under local anaesthetic, women's health (including pap-smears), specialist referrals, and after hours call outs for emergencies. I also have a special interest in aesthetic medicine (botulism toxin and non-permanent fillers) and IV therapy."
