SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - The translation of the Afrikaans book Meesterboere: Denkers en Doeners is now available in English.
Master Farmers: Leaders and Legends relate the successes of twenty South African farmers. The book is written by Oudtshoorn author and freelance journalist Tisha Steyn and Dr Piet van Zyl, retired farmer and academic, who interviewed these farmers countrywide to learn each one's philosophy about life as a farmer.
The names of the farmers were proposed by large agricultural business according to certain selection criteria. The interviews were done on the farms and the farmers' wisdom and insights were for the first time recorded in book form.
In each of the twenty chapters the farmer tells the unique story of how he used creative solutions to overcome serious challenges. Inadvertently, the farmers relate how they became strong leaders in agriculture who left a legacy by creating a successful family business.
The farmers share how they manage finances, technology and succession, and how they approach prickly agricultural issues such as land reform, redistribution and labour legislation.Following the success of this publication Steyn and Van Zyl are already hard at work with a new a publication which deals with game farming in South Africa.
