NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS – The 6th annual Sneeuberg Agricultural Association (Sneeuberg Agri) livestock auction was held on Tuesday, May 17, at Rietpoort, farm of Doug and Liz Stern.
The two biggest changes this year were that the auction was limited to cattle only and that almost 800 cattle were presented. Paul Hobson, of Grahamstown-based Hobson & Co, who presented the auction, commented that it was probably the largest cattle auction they had presented, certainly in the Karoo.
The presentation consisted of weaner calves, stores and slaughter cattle from members of Sneeuberg Agri and a few guest sellers. A feature of the auction was the excellent quality of the cattle, indicating the extent to which cattle farming has gained prominence in the Sneeuberg. “Fat stock were particularly good”, said Hobson, “as was the quality of weaners”. Prices were in line with market trends and a turnover of R 3,44 million was realised.
Successfully presenting an auction of this size requires much effort in creating the physical infrastructure and feeding all the sellers, buyers and visitors. “The Stern family must be commended on a huge effort in this regard”, said Jaco Loots, chairman of Sneeuberg Agri, “without them this event would not be possible and the hospitality which they display is simply wonderful”.
Loots further extended his thanks to the members of Sneeuberg Agri who had supported the auction so well, indicating the level of commitment and dynamism in the organisation. Paul Hobson added that” it always amazes me how well Karoo farmers stand together and Hobson & Co are delighted to be associated with this community project”.
