GRAAFF-REINET — The opening of the Walter Battiss art exhibition at the Imibala Gallery in Graaff-Reinet was a great success.
The gallery had a good turnout of art lovers and an enjoyable evening was had by all who attended.
The enthusiasm of guest speaker Ross Turner, the curator of the Walter Battiss Museum in Somerset East, while regaling all those present about the life and works of Walter Battiss, proved infectious.
Walter Battiss (1906 - 1982) was one of South Africa's foremost abstract artists. His travels and particularly his interest in primitive rock art had a profound impact on his work.
He was a prolific writer and an academic, retiring from Unisa as a professor of Fine Art in 1971.
The exhibition is open to the public, so why not swing by the Imibala Gallery in Church Street to view the selection of Walter Battiss original work and limited edition on display.
