NIEU-BETHESDA — Nieu-Bethesda became a little celebrity struck when the lead singer of Mango Groove, Claire Johnston, and her partner quietly visited the village this week on their way back to Johannesburg after a break at Shamwari Game Reserve.
Flamboyantly dressed in a colourful kaftan and turban, Claire was humble and down to earth, asking questions about the village and the eateries here.
Although she was born in the south of England, Claire has lived in South Africa most of her life.
At the tender age of 17, she joined Mango Groove and has come to be recognised as a symbol and an icon of the Rainbow Nation.
Songs like “Special Star” and “Hometalk” were synonymous with music in the 80’s and 90’s and Claire continues to contribute positively to South African music. It was an honour and a privilege for Nieu-Bethesda to be visited by a legend of her calibre.
