NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS — The Nieu-Bethesda Pump-Palooza is an annual autumnal event in the village that celebrates everything to do with pumpkins!
For months now, treasured seeds from the most spectacular pumpkins at the previous festival have been handed out in small brown packets, dried, planted, nurtured and are hopefully still growing into prizeworthy pumpkins to be exhibited at the Palooza on April 15.
If you look carefully into backyards and veggie patches in the village you are sure to see more than a handful of these glorious orange orbs peeking out from their velvet green leaves. Some prize pumpkins are being grown in secret locations, away from prying eyes, sure to surprise even the most expert growers on the day.
Members of the public are invited to bring their pumpkins along to participate in this fun event.
Even if time has run away with you and you have been unable to grow your own, pumpkins will be available for sale in the village, or you can buy your own elsewhere, decorate it according to category and bring it along – the more the merrier!
This year categories include:
• The biggest pumpkin
• The smallest giant
• The best or carved pumpkin
• The best arrangement of pumpkins
• The sexiest pumpkin
• The hidden beauty
• The weirdest pumpkin
• The best pumpkin alternative
• The most ancient, very dead, or never born pumpkin
• The best contribution for children under 10
Bring your pumpkins along to be categorised at 10 am at the Ramstal pub.
From noon there will be stores and pumpkin sales and at 1pm the kiddies can participate in pumpkin sales and an Easter egg hunt. Judging takes place at 3pm and the day will wind down with a live band - “Bright Lights, Big City” on their Hare’s Ear East Cape Tour which will continue into the evening.
Be sure to take a trip out to Bethesda to the Pump Palooza on April 15 - there promises to be fun for the whole family!
