GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Graaff-Reinet's golden girl, Rentia Oosthuizen (27), made her town proud when she won three gold medals at the SA Athletic Open Games in Bloemfontein from 22 to 24 September.
The sport sensation, who was also recently named Eastern Cape Sportswoman of the Year for Person with Disability, won gold in the 100m, long jump and shot-put events. She was also awarded silver in the 200m and bronze in the javelin throw.
Her performance ensured her a spot at the Trisome Games in Turkey next year.
Oosthuizen previously won gold in shot-put at the World Athletics Championships for Persons with Disability. She also won silver in the triathlon event for athletes with Down syndrome, as well as in the breaststroke event at the World Swimming Championships in Canada. She set new African records for these latter events.
"My dream is to break the world record in long jump and shot-put," Oosthuizen previously said. She now has the opportunity to do this at the Trisome Games.
The Advertiser caught up with Oosthuizen and her two trainers, Theo Dörfling and Alid Els, at Hoër Volkskool's sports grounds on Monday 7 October. If her commitment during training is any indication of her performance on the world stage, she will soon add more gold to her collection.
