OLYMPIC SPORT NEWS & VIDEO - The Tokyo Olympic Games will begin at 13:00 local South African time.
Tokyo Olympic Games 2020
Due to Covid-19 restrictions in Japan, the opening ceremony will take place in front of a largely-empty stadium. Some South African athletes, including swimmer Chad le Clos and women’s hockey goalkeeper Phumelela Mbande, will be in attendance at the opening ceremony.
The Tokyo Olympic Games begin today, July 23, and will end on Sunday, August 8, 2021. The games were originally set to take place in July of 2020 – as the Olympics takes place every four years – but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the decision was made to postpone the games to a year later.
Even though it’s postponed, the event is still called the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020.
The official opening ceremony begins today at 13:00, however, some sports fixtures have already begun. South Africa played football (soccer) earlier today against the host nation and unfortunately lost the game 1 – 0 to Japan.
