GRAAFF-REINET SPORT NEWS - The pigeon racing season concluded this weekend when the winners of the various clubs were honoured at the prize-giving on Saturday 12 November at Botanics, Graaff-Reinet.
Karoo Racing Pigeon Union members were awarded for their efforts after a great season of competitive flying and the competition came right down to the wire.
Fourie overall champ
Karoo Racing Pigeon Union Chairperson Lourens Fourie (Golden Valley) is the overall 2022 champion, while Karoo Hokke (Merino) ended second overall, Smith Fourie Hokke third, G & J Heunis (B) and G & J Heunis (A) (Merino) a credible fourth and fifth.
Yearlings
Fourie (Golden Valley) won the yearlings (young pigeons) section, while Smith Fourie Hokke (Golden Valley) came second and Karoo Lofts (Merino) ended third. Gerdie Mooimelk (Golden Valley) was fourth, and G&J Heunis (Merino) a solid fifth.
Open division
Fourie (Golden Valley) took top honours in the open division, with Karoo Hokke (Merino) coming in second, Smith Fourie (Golden Valley) third, G & J Heunis (Merino) fourth and J Oosthuizen fifth.
Super league
Fourie again came out tops, with Karoo Hokke second, Smith Fourie Hokke third, Gerdie Longhope fourth and Gerdie Mooimelk fifth.
Breeding
Fourie thanked all for attending the event. "All participants are now breeding their pigeons for next year to keep up the outstanding performances on all levels of pigeon racing in the Karoo Union," he said.
The highest price paid for a pigeon on auction was R3 100.
