MIDDELBURG NEWS — The students of Grootfontein used their initiative to start a hockey team of their own at the College this year.
For many years, rugby and netball were the ruling sports at the college.
In the last few years, the soccer players also put themselves on the map by playing excellent soccer against local teams as well as other agricultural colleges. As quite a lot of the female students played hockey at school, they then decided to start practicing hockey at the college. Soon the ladies were joined by their fellow students and now boasts a combined hockey team consisting of 22 players!
The Karoo Hockey Club (KHC) played against Grootfontein College of Agriculture in Cradock on Saturday, August 5.

Karoo Hockey Club was started on April 1 by a few members of the Club. They originally said that KHC will be a team representing Cradock and Middelburg but as a result of great interest shown by residents of both towns, they decided to make two individual clubs.
They are striving and looking forward to grow to a senior league of hockey in the Karoo.
The passionate hockey players would like to target Graaff-Reinet and Somerset East next to form clubs.
Queenstown has a club as well. Their plans are to form an annual league which includes all these towns. Hockey has no age limit and the Karoo Hockey members ages go from 19 to 55!
As the President of the Karoo Hockey Club, Murray Lord would like to thank Grootfontein for the great game of hockey on Saturday and thanks for bringing all the supporters with them!
