SPORT NEWS - Sixty bowlers converged on the Somerset East Bowling Club greens on 3 and 4 June to contest the Midlands pairs competition for men and women.
Ladies
- The 24 players - 12 teams - each played with three bowls and each game was played over 16-ends to fit in all the games.
- The ladies had to play three games on Saturday and Sunday including two more section games and the final.
- After five sectional games, Helene de Wet and Priscilla West on eight game points and +32 shots, headed Section 1, while Rina Kleynhans and Hettie Cross were undefeated in Section 2 on 10 +44.
Ladies final
In the Final, peels were only called once - on the end. An extra end had to be played and here the de Wet/West combination secured their passage to the EP Finals.
Mens
Thirty six bowlers were divided into four sections - 18 teams, playing three bowls each and three games over 16-ends on Saturday. On Sunday, one sectional game was played, then the semi-finals and the final.
Wally Koetaan and Robert Scott from Graaff-Reinet remained undefeated in Section 1 and had to face Eric Louw and Johan van Onselen from Middleburg the Section 4 winners.
Arthur Langley and Martin Verwey also from Graaff-Reinet were undefeated in Section 2 and faced Ivor Wakeford and Niel Colyn from Graaff-Reinet - the winners of Section 3.
Mens semi-finals
The Langley/Wakeford semi-final was a tough encounter with the Wakeford/Colyn duo winning by a single shot 16 - 15.
The second semi-final between Koetaan and Louw was also a close affair - Louw and partner winning 20 - 18.
Mens finals
- Wakeford and Colyn turned on the heat in the final to defeat Louw and van Onselen by 22 - 14.
Upcoming events:
- The winning couples will travel to Gqeberha to take part in the EP Pairs Finals at Westview Club on 10 and 11 June.
- On 17 and 18 June the Graaff-Reinet Bowling Club Trips competition for men and women will be played on the greens of the Graaff-Reinet Bowling Club.
