GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The third annual Roof de Karoo Mountain Bike Challenge between Mountain Zebra and Camdeboo National Parks – which is being held this coming weekend - promises to be the best one yet.
The three-day mountain bike challenge from 4 to 7 April traverses the remote mountainous areas of the two national parks as well as several farms in between.
From one park to another, the trail is a celebration of the Mountain Zebra Camdeboo Protected Environment (MZCPE).
The 177km cycling event is hosted by the MZCPE in partnership with South African National Parks and sees participants cycling over numerous private properties which form part of the 268 000ha Protected Environment. The MZCPE was created to protect the critical biodiversity of the area between the two national parks in the greater karoo, centred around the four towns of Graaff-Reinet, Nieu-Bethesda, Cradock and Pearston in the Eastern Cape.
The Roof de Karoo Challenge is the only cycling event in the country which starts and fishes in two different national parks.
Overnight pop-up camps under magnificent Karoo stars will be set up for participants on all three nights of the challenge, accompanied by the warm hospitality of the local farmers.
