GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Graaff-Reinet community, and even families across the world, united through fitness last week Saturday, when they participated in a 5km 'at home' challenge.
The event was hosted virtually by Union High School, to help raise money for the school's Covid-19 Care Fund. Participants had the option of walking, jogging, running or cycling from their chosen starting line, and completing the 5km within the three-hour lockdown exercise window, and adhering to lockdown regulations.
"The idea behind this 'challenge' was for everyone to join together in spirit, even though they were participating in the event separately," said Mariëtte Burger on behalf of the school.
"The school hoped it would be a community-building event, and the enthusiasm shown by the community was overwhelming."
According to Burger, hundreds of locals signed up, but old Unionites from across the world also participated. "Judging by all the photos [we received], a lot of fun was had all round." Some participants even surprised by completing the distance on Segway or horseback.

"We especially enjoyed the photos of the pets dressed up in Union sports kits, as well as the spectacular early morning views and were amazed by the dedication shown by all the pre and prep school learners who successfully completed the 5km."
The school thanked the hundreds of participants that rose to the challenge. "We received a hugely positive response and we simply can't put into words how much your support at this challenging time has meant to us," Burger added. Did you participate?
