GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Sport and culture stars from Union and Volkskool showcased their talent and quality sportsmanship during the highly-anticipated interschools last week.
However, there can only be one winner. This year, Volkskool's determination earned them this bragging right, as they managed a nail-biting final score of 23-22 against Union.
"We are very proud of all our learners, whether they represented Volkskool on the field, court or the stands," said Suliza van Wyk on behalf of the victors. "We are proud of the sportsmanship you showed on and off the field."
Van Wyk also thanked Union for the excellent way in which they hosted this year's clash. The event was a momentous occasion for Union, as the school celebrates its 100th birthday this year.

"It was an honour for Union to host this event in our centenary year," their headmaster William Pringle told the Advertiser. He thanked the competitors, teachers, parents and coaches who showed commitment throughout the competition, as well as the participants for their determination.
"Volkskool claimed the bragging rights as victors of interschools, which they rightfully deserve," Pringle added.

The interschools saw learners participate in golf, tennis, chess, shooting, a quiz and debate evening, rugby and hockey.
Volkskool won the golf 13-87, while Union's senior chess team won 12-0. Union proved to be ace sharpshooters with their score of 98-95, and they also won the quiz event 38-25. Both Volkskool's senior and junior debating teams won the debate, and their first boys and girls tennis teams shone on the courts with final scores of 4-5 and 2-7 in their favour.
The first team hockey match was closely contested, with excellent skills displayed by both teams. This game ended in a draw. The first team rugby match saw Volkskool crowned as champions with a final score of 3-22.
"Congratulations to all the participants of this year's interschools, your resilience and sportsmanship were second to none," Pringle said.
"We look forward to next year's clash!" Van Wyk concluded.
