GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Over the long weekend, two different squash tournaments were held in which players from the Graaff-Reinet Squash Club participated.
Le Clue Basson of Graaff-Reinet Squash Club, along with Bruwer van der Walt of Grootfontein College, took part in the annual Winter Solstice Singles Squash Tournament in George.
This tournament sees players from Wellington, Port Elizabeth and Knysna travelling through to participate. The two did exceptionally well with Basson only losing two of his games and drawing one, and van der Walt winning all six of his games. They finished a very credible sixth out of nine teams.
Three doubles teams headed to East London to take part in the annual Beacon Bay 100 Club Doubles Tournament – a highlight on the squash calendar. In this tournament, the combined ages of both players in a team must exceed one hundred.
On Saturday morning, teams played in the sections to which they had been assigned in order to determine the seeding for the playoffs. Following their five matches, Danie Jackson and Tonie Botha remained in the B Section, Willie van Zyl and Pierre de Lange moved from the C Section to the D Section and Rodney Mare and Samantha Graham moved up from the D Section to the C Section.
All three teams acquitted themselves well with van Zyl and de Lange winning their section, Jackson and Botha being placed third in their section and Mare and Graham finishing in fourth place. Samantha Graham was awarded a consolation prize for being the only female player in the C section and for handling the pressure!
The three doubles teams will be heading for Oudtshoorn this weekend to participate in the inaugural Big Birds Doubles Tournament.
