GRAAFF-REINET NEWS – The 2017 bowling season kicked off in a helter-skelter fashion last weekend.
The Midlands Mixed Pairs was scheduled to be played at the Middelburg Bowling Club, but due to weather conditions and sensitive greens the venue switched to Graaff-Reinet last Wednesday.
A few willing and able members put in a great effort to prepare the greens in time at the club. With 18 teams (36 bowlers) entered, two sections had to play four games last Saturday, January 14 to ensure that the competition would be completed in time.At the end of play on Saturday, there were no clear-cut section winners, with four deciders to be played on Sunday morning.
The section winners were as follows:
Section A - Niel Colyn and Charlene Burger (Graaff-Reinet); Section B – Loraine van der Berg and Johan van Onselen (Middelburg); Section C – Danie and Marieda Scherman (Middelburg) and Section D – Neels and Carin Goosen (Cradock).
In the semi-finals, the Colyn/Burger combination beat the two ‘Vans’ by three shots, while the Goosens recorded a 19 – 13 win over the Schermans.
The final was a closely contested game until the half-way stage, when the Colyn/Burger duo picked a four and a three on consecutive ends, to basically wrap up game. The winning score was 19 – 11.
