GRAAFF-REINET GOLF NEWS - On Saturday 29 October, a very popular Town versus Country matchplay competition, was held at the Graaff-Reinet Golf Club.
The tour commissioner, Derek Helm, mentioned that it was the first time this competition was held in Graaff-Reinet and was hoping this would become an annual event.
Two teams were chosen, one from farmers in surrounding areas and the other from town-based golfers, with 30 golfers in each team.
The day was a shotgun start with the two teams having two golfers each in every covey. Both team captains went all out to encourage their team members.
When the competition started at 12:30, the golfers played six holes of foursomes, six holes of better ball matches and then six holes of singles in a Ryder Cup format. Every player played for vital points.
After the cut and thrust of the competition in very hot weather, the Townies were declared the winners of the Camdeboo Cup by a margin of 10 matches to 5.
Helm thanked the sponsors and hope that this type of tournament will encourage more players to participate.
The response of all players was overwhelming and the farmers vowed to bring an even better team to the second tournament.
