SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - As a 50th birthday present retired professional golfer John Bland flew his wife, Sonja, to Europe in July last year to take part in the 2016 International Austrian Amateur Women's Championship, held at the Golf Club Kremstal where she walked away with the senior title.
Now the Southern Cape Women's Golf squad member has successfully defended her title – this time at the Thermengolf Loipersdorf-Fuerstenfeld course. Sonja went into the final round of the 54-hole event, tied for the lead with rounds of 79 and 79 in the first two.
Great scrambling saw Sonja post an even par front nine of 36 shots before ending up on a third round score of 77 to beat Karin Kocher from Austria by three shots.
Straight after the tournament, Sonja travelled to the 2017 International Hungary Senior Championship, held at Pannonia Golf & Country just outside Budapest, another 54-hole tournament.
Having played nine days in a row, Sonja had to settle for second place behind Anna Dzurenda from the Czech Republic.
Nonetheless, a great achievement and a successful fortnight with some excess baggage in the form of trophies for the Fancourt member and George resident.
