FOOTBALL NEWS - The Sarah Baartman District regional football league for the 2023/2024 season started off with a bang in September, bringing football action to Graaff-Reinet and Jansenville.
This season, the spotlight shines on Stream D, where nine dynamic teams are vying for supremacy.
Among them are local favourites Future Stars FC, Morocco Eagles, FC Galaxy, Portugal Birds FC, Camdeboo Football Academy Development, Birds United FC and Black Arrows FC, all hailing from Graaff-Reinet.
Joining them from Jansenville are JV Manchester United FC and JV Shooting Stars FC.
The regional football league has adopted an exciting format, with Graaff-Reinet hosting games on Saturdays while Jansenville takes centre stage on Sundays. The arrangement sees teams travelling between the two towns every weekend to participate in the league games.
Despite the enthusiastic start to the season, referees have encountered challenges with certain clubs failing to appear for scheduled matches.
As a result, opposing teams have been awarded soft points. In response, league organisers have issued a stern reminder to all clubs' administrators and managers, emphasising the importance of adhering to the South African Football Association (Safa) rules, particularly the "No Card No Play" policy.
In the neighbouring ABC Motsepe League, the Graaff-Reinet-based Camdeboo Football Academy faced a formidable challenge last Saturday evening. They were defeated 2-0 by the Buffalo City Relatives from East London at the Botanics.
Club manager Dan Memeza candidly acknowledged the tough contest posed by the Buffalos, admitting they had the upper hand during the game. Memeza also noted that the team continues to face challenges when it comes to securing practice fields.
However, the Camdeboo Football Academy remains resolute and is gearing up for its next home game scheduled for 18 November at the Botanics. This time, they will be facing off against Bush Bucks FC from Mthatha.
Memeza expressed gratitude for the support received from the local community and urged even more football enthusiasts to come out and support their home games.
With the Sarah Baartman District regional football league in full swing, fans can expect an exhilarating season filled with intense match-ups.
