GOLFING NEWS - The Ernie Els Invitational was held at Fancourt in aid of the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation late in December.
The foundation strives to identify talented young South Africans of high-school going age (predominantly from families of limited resources) and provides them with educational assistance and playing opportunities, aiming to produce successful young leaders and golfers.
Several top businessmen participated in their sponsored teams along with sport celebrities such as Morné Morkel, Jean de Villiers, Jacques Kallis, Victor Matfield, Ross Cronjé, Malcolm Marx, John Smit, and a host of others.
The 4-Ball Alliance Team event was won by Jaco Ahlers, JP Jones, Andrew Whitelaw and Graeme van der Nest. Jaco Ahlers also won the Pro Strokeplay, shooting 65 in the first and 65 in the second round, finishing on a total of 130.
The event was hosted by Ernie and Liezl Els and in addition to Ernie, included pro golfers such as Branden Grace, Dean Burmeister, Thomas Aiken, Brandon Stone, Haydn Porteous, Shaun Norris, George Coetzee and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, all of who contributed to the outstanding success of the event.
The auction raised R1,7-million, thanks to MC Matthew Pearce and Auctioneer Barney Girnun and to the many sponsors and suppliers for their incredible ongoing support of the foundation.
