STEYTLERVILLE CRICKET NEWS - Steytlerville Club, one of the 11 competitors in the Central Karoo Cricket Union league, claims it gets the short end of the stick when it comes to playing grounds and facilities.
A senior member of the club, who does not want to be named, said the Steytlerville Cricket Club is thankful that they can make use of the Dr Beyers Naudé (DBNLM) municipal grounds, but it is unfair that they must maintain it themselves by cutting grass, rolling the pitch and watering the field.
The team once won the league and were four-time finalists following the 2014/2015 season.
The aggrieved player said they had to be satisfied with an eighth place in the 2019/2010-season. He blames a lack of players' interest because there is no help from the local municipality.
Edwardine Abader, acting spokesperson for the DBNLM, admitted that grass cutting at the facility is a major challenge, due to Steytlerville being without a tractor for an extended time.
However, she said that a municipal employee regularly waters the field. "A neighbouring farmer assists from time to time, but due to the drought, he uses his tractor for this purpose. To water the field is not a problem, we use water from the wastewater plant," Abader said.
On the issue of maintaining the cricket pitch, Abader said the Steytlerville Cricket Club undertook to maintain the pitch themselves.
Abader added that they received relevant training in this regard. "The pitch roller has been made available to the cricket club to maintain the pitch. Unfortunately, the roller is out of order and the municipality has sent it in for repairs," Abader added.
