GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - ANC Councillor Willem Jacobus Safers has just been named the new mayor of the Dr Beyers Naude local municipality.
DA-nominated Ewald Loock and ANC-nominated Willem Safers each received 12 votes, and the speaker, CSA Clr Cheslin Felix, cast his deciding vote in favour of Safers.
This comes after the speaker failed to provide the legal opinion on the procedural issues raised during the previous council meeting.
The municipal manager also failed to respond to the DA’s request for guidance in this regard.
The speaker requested a five-minute break after the DA raised another procedural issue relating to the casting vote of the speaker. According to the DA, the speaker does not have a casting vote in the election of a mayor.
ANC Clr Thembekile Spogter has just been elected as new chief whip for the DBNLM after both the DA-nominated Clr Ricardo Smith and Spogter received 12 votes and the speaker, CSA Clr Cheslin Felix, cast his deciding vote in favour of Spogter.
The DA requested the media to inform the public that they are not in support of the "illegal process" and will not leave it at that.
