NATIONAL NEWS - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is exploring the possibility of introducing electronic voting in South Africa.
To introduce the concept to citizens, the IEC is currently holding information sessions across the country. A proposal is expected to go before parliament in March next year for consideration. In the meantime, members of the public are invited to comment on the matter.
"This is a discussion we must have," said Western Cape Provincial Electoral Officer Michael Hendrikse during an information session held on Monday 29 September, at the George Banquet Hall.
He stressed that exploring e-voting does not mean it will be implemented in next year’s local government elections. Should parliament view the proposal positively, the process would still take time, with more public awareness and consultation likely to follow.
The IEC noted that electronic voting is not widely adopted internationally. Some countries have tested it and reverted to paper ballots, while others, such as Venezuela, refined the system and have used it for years. However, the majority of nations still rely on traditional paper ballots.
