MOTORING NEWS - One of the world's most iconic sports cars, the Porsche 911, has been captivating automobile lovers for over half-a-century. Now the car has seen the production of its one millionth model.
The landmark car – a Carrera S in green with gold and mahogany trim – rolled off the company's production line in Zuffenhausen on 11 May, just a few yards from where the first models of the 911 were built in 1963.
The millionth car has been finished and trimmed to honour the first 911 from 1963, although based on a 2017 911 Carrera S. The millionth 911 is painted in Irish Green which dates back to the early days.
The interior is outfitted in wood, leather and old-school black-and-white checkerboard inserts. There's also a plaque on the dashboard commemorating the car's special place in Porsche history.
Porsche is not putting the one millionth 911 on sale. Instead, it is taking it on a grand tour around the world, including stops at the Nurburgring, the Scottish Highlands and the United States.
Despite 54 years of success and being the car that defined Porsche, today the Cayenne and Macan SUVs vastly outsell it. Combined SUV production has already passed the one-million mark.
In 2016, Porsche created a lavish coffee table book that celebrates the 911, revealing the continuous process of evolution and build quality that has kept the car fresh down the years.
Founded by Ferdinand Porsche in Stuttgart, Germany in 1931, Porsche has grown to become one of the world's most renowned luxury sports car manufacturers.
