GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality is in mourning following the death of Nolan Skrambreel, a municipal employee, who died in an accident on Monday morning, 28 October, just 10 days after his 21st birthday.
He was born on 18 October 2003 and died on 28 October 2024, just 10 days after his 21st birthday.
The tragic incident occurred at 08:20 in Mzwandile Peyi Street in Asherville during a waste collection operation.
According to the police, the waste removal truck was moving when the deceased, a member of the waste collection team, attempted to jump onto the truck from the side.
Skrambreel slipped and landed underneath the vehicle. Eyewitnesses on the scene rushed to help. "It was very upsetting and sad," said one resident. "People were in shock."
Colleagues made frantic calls for assistance and say the local police and ambulance teams arrived shortly after the accident, but Skrambreel was declared dead on the scene.
Municipal Manager Dr Eddie Rankwana, expressed his sorrow. "I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, loved ones and colleagues affected by this horrific loss." He emphasised the impact of the tragedy on the community and the municipal staff and encouraged residents to come together in support of the family during this challenging time.
Skrambreel's grandmother, Alida Skrambreel (82), will remember her grandson as a respectful young man, who was always in a good mood.
In accordance with procedure, Graaff-Reinet SAPS is investigating a case of culpable homicide.
