NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS - The final of the Youth Explosion Cup Tournament was played on 20 June at the Nieu-Bethesda soccer field.
Denley Swartz, organiser of the tournament, said the match, that saw Young Stars FC and Eleven Arrows FC facing off, brought the whole community of Nieu-Bethesda to a standstill.
“We drew spectators from all walks of life who came in large numbers - young and old alike.
We were especially excited to see that even the children were there and could witness football at its finest,” said Swartz during an interview with the Graaff-Reinet Advertiser after the game.
“At one point, Young Stars FC was leading the final by four goals to nil against Eleven Arrows FC, but Eleven Arrows showed the whole community that by never giving up, you can achieve remarkable results.”
Eleven Arrows FC came back strongly in the second half with renewed determination and energy.
“Their never-say-die spirit saw them score three goals and almost level the match, but Young Stars FC held on to secure their seventh championship title in a row,” said Swartz.
“Young Stars FC made history by becoming the first team in Nieu-Bethesda to achieve this feat.”
“As the founder of the Youth Explosion programme, I am overwhelmed to have played a role in fostering this newfound excitement and excellent sportsmanship in our small community with such a big heart.”
Swartz said the journey had not been easy, but he remains standing tall as a clean and sober recovering addict, making history while inspiring others in the community.
