KAROO NEWS - The Special Programme Unit of the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality (DBNLM) presented a youth debate at Masizakhe Community Hall on Monday, 17 June. About 72 youth delegates from across the local municipality were brought to the community hall to engage in the debate. The theme of the day was: 'Issues affecting the youth 30 years into Democracy'.
In his opening statements Liso Mkhahlela from DBNLM said: “For the young changers, 16 June marks a very significant day in South African history.
"It’s a day that generates the courage and determination of the young people who stood up for their rights and fought for their future – and June 16 celebrate the courage and resilience of the young people who have shaped the history of South Africa and continue to shape our world today. We honor the struggles, the conquerors of those who have covered for us and also recognize the impact they can have on a collective future.
As we gather here today we honor the spirit of youth, the power of collective action we recognize that you, the young people, are the driving force behind positive change. You are the ones who will change the future, who will challenge the status quo, who will create a world that is more just equitable and sustainable”. He concluded by saying” You are the leaders, innovators, problem-solvers of tomorrow, and never under-estimate the power of your voice, youth must speak up, speak out and demand to be heard!"
Voices of the Delegates
Luthando Mali Ward 11 delegate of Jansenville said it’s a 'havoc’ and Jansenville is an area faced with skills development and job opportunities, high substance abuse, rare sports facilities, teenage pregnancy, housing and no basic department service delivery.
Leandro McKay of Ward 9 in Wllowmore raised his concerns about unemployment and poverty.
Luzuko Kedamile of Ward 6 – Development is nothing to do with affiliation, the youth must come together and fight violence, poverty, mental health, depression and substance abuse. More of the youth engagements to be brought in.
Herschelle Minnies of Ward 4 – “Today I want to take a stand: I am hearing everyone is talking about our unemployment, but what about our education?
