GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A monumental figure in Graaff-Reinet's pre-school education sector closed the chapter on her almost three-decade-long career at Union Pre-School on 13 June.
Sue Oliver joined the staff at the pre-school in 1991 and became its principal in 1994.
Olivier devoted her life to creating a special teaching and learning environment at the school, with the sole desire of improving the lives of those who attend.
"Throughout my time at this special little school, I have wanted to make sure that our children got the very best education possible," she said. The popular teacher said she would miss her job and the children immensely.
"Children in the early learning phases are so keen and willing to learn; they're like little sponges," Olivier explained.
A tea was held on the day of Olivier's departure to bid her a farewell.
The party, attended by parents, members of staff and friends of the school, concluded a career in which Olivier helped hundreds of children learn how to write their names, tie their shoes or tell the difference between a circle and a square.
"Twenty-seven years is a long time in anyone's language," Olivier added. "I'm terribly sad to be leaving, but excited for the next chapter in my life."
