GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — There were, unfortunately, some serious crimes reported in Graaff-Reinet and Aberdeen during the period 26 June to 3 July.
A case of murder was reported that occurred on 30 June at about 23:30. The incident happened on a farm in the Aberdeen district, after a quarrel between two men who had been drinking together.
It is alleged that the suspect, a 35-year-old male, stabbed the victim, a 29-year-old male with a knife. The victim died on the scene. The suspect has been arrested and the case is under investigation.
One case of rape was reported in Graaff-Reinet. The incident took place in Umasizakhe on 30 June between 14:00 and 17:45. According to the complainant, her 6-year-old daughter told her that she was knocked to the ground by an unknown male, but upon medical investigation, it was found that penetration had taken place. The suspect is still unknown at this stage, and the case is under investigation.
There were three business burglaries during this period in the Graaff-Reinet police district, two of which were in Nieu Bethesda.
The first incident took place on 27 June at about 08:00 at Pepper Tree Farm, in Adendorp. According to the complainant, a window of the premises was broken to gain entrance and the suspect stole electrical equipment to the value of R26 000. The suspect has been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.
The second incident took place at Lettie de Klerk Primary School, in Nieu-Bethesda between 07:45 on 30 June and 09:00 on 1 July.
According to the complainant, he was doing his regular patrols and found that several classrooms had been broken into, as well as a container on the premises which is used as a storeroom.
A laptop and groceries were taken with a total value of R7875.
There is a possible suspect, but no arrests have yet been made, and the investigation continues. Another incident in Nieu Bethesda happened on 1 July between 09:00 and 13:00 at Sneeuberg Backpackers. According to the complainant, she went out and upon return found that a window was open which had been previously closed. The suspect took clothing, bags and other items to the value of R7930. At this stage, there are no known suspects, and the case is still under investigation.
There were also two residential burglaries in Graaff-Reinet, both of which have no known suspects and are also still under investigation.
Between 29 June (23:15) and 30 June (03:15), suspect or suspects removed a window from a door to gain entrance to a property in Spekboom Street, Mandela Park. Cash and a cell phone were stolen with a total value of R1400.
The second incident took place in Paul Kruger Street, Graaff-Reinet.
According to the complainant, a door and window were forced open, as well as burglar bars, broken to gain entrance to the residence.
This happened on 2 July at about 03:45. Furniture and appliances to the value of R10 000 were taken.
