PROVINCIAL NEWS - The Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA) has issued a response to the State of the Province Address (Sopa) presented by Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane. As a union representing workers in the Eastern Cape, the PSA acknowledges certain positive aspects outlined in the address, particularly the focus on job creation and infrastructure development.
However, the PSA emphasises the need for bolder decisions on critical issues affecting workers and the province as a whole. "While the Sopa touched on the mentioned priorities, it failed to address pressing concerns related to occupational health and safety, rampant criminal activities targeting schools and health facilities, and deficiencies in public services," reads their statement.
Of particular concern to the PSA is the dilapidated state of buildings that house employees, which compromises their safety and violates Occupational Health and Safety Standards.
The union also highlights the challenges facing healthcare services, including understaffing, long waiting times and inadequate facilities, which were not adequately addressed in the address.
Furthermore, the PSA expresses dissatisfaction with the non-filling of vacancies in government institutions, which raises concerns about public service delivery and governance.
The union stresses the importance of accountability, transparency and consultation with unions and other stakeholders in decision-making processes.
In light of these issues, the PSA urges the government to prioritise the needs of workers and improve working conditions.
"The union calls for increased accounta-bility and transparency in government operations, a stronger focus on job creation and economic development, and a more consultative approach to governance that includes input from workers and unions."
Overall, the PSA emphasises the importance of increased investment in public services and infrastructure to ensure that all citizens have access to necessities such as healthcare, education, and clean water.
