EASTERN CAPE NEWS - The Samara Karoo Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape is situated 55 km outside the charming and historic Graaff-Reinet, the fourth oldest town in South Africa.
This game reserve recently informed Graaff-Reinet Advertiser that Sibella’s Legacy is a testament to cheetah conservation, as she was the first wild cheetah to return to the Great Karoo in over 130 years in 2004.
Sibella was rescued from a dog attack in the North West Province and taken to the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre for treatment and rehabilitation.
In December 2003, she was released onto Samara, becoming the first wild cheetah to inhabit the area since the early 19th century.
Sibella turned out to be an incredible mother, raising multiple litters of cubs to adulthood and contributing significantly to the growing cheetah population at Samara.
She left a lasting impact as a symbol of conservation. Her story captured global attention through a National Geographic documentary titled Sibella the Miracle Cheetah, making her a worldwide ambassador for cheetah conservation.
Her legacy continues at Samara, where guests can track wild cheetah on foot, a privilege made possible by her habituation and the success of the conservation programme.
This is a three-to-four day slackpacking adventure for those who appreciate the delights of a walking safari with a difference.
