ABERDEEN NEWS - With the appointment of Sergeant Jemile Green as Designated Firearm Officer (DFO) at Aberdeen Police station, the firearm licence backlog is something of the past.
For some time, Aberdeen Police station had been facing challenges in processing local firearm licence related matters. In February this year the backlog stood at more than 30 applications, spanning four years. Green took up the reins as DFO on 1 March and his first priority was to clear the backlog.
The station has confirmed that it is now up to date with all applications and related matters and no longer needs assistance from Graaff-Reinet SAPS.
From 25 August to 13 September, Green attended a DFO course, presented at Benoni SAPS academy. He says to him the most valuable part of the course was acquiring detailed knowledge about the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000. This included a better practical understanding of the procedure and processes to be followed with firearms in the estates of deceased people.
Green started his career in SAPS in 2007 at the Bisho SAPS Academy as a student constable. His 17 year SAPS career includes experience in crime prevention and exposure as domestic violence coordinator and CPF (community policing forum) coordinator, liquor inspector and second hand goods officer.
