GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - At 71 years young, Nanziwe Wanda Vena is a force to be reckoned with. A woman of many talents - musician, clothing designer, caterer, and decorator - she embodies the spirit of self-reliance and determination. With a message ringing clear, Vena urges, "Stand up and do it yourself." Her journey into entrepreneurship began with a passion for sewing, instilled during her primary school days back in 1963. Handwork wasn't just a subject; it was a way of life, where Vena found joy in stitching fabrics together.
Fast forward to 1986, and Vena seized the opportunity to hone her sewing skills in Cape Town under the auspices of the Students' Health and Welfare Centres Organisation (Shawco), a move that would set her on the path to independence.
Equipped with newfound expertise and a few donated sewing machines, Vena wasted no time in launching her own sewing and knitting business.
From there, she embarked on a collaborative venture with fellow entrepreneurs Ntombentsha Payi and Thobeka Mapukatha, employing 25 women in Cathcart, Eastern Cape.
Despite their efforts, sustainable income remained elusive, prompting Vena to forge ahead solo. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to Bhisho, then Stutterheim, where she employed more women and expanded her business horizons. In 1998,
Vena made Graaff-Reinet her home, where she found not only a place to live but also a stage for her musical talents. As the president of the Peace Makers choir, she not only lent her voice but also her design skills, creating uniforms for the ensemble.
Yet, Vena's entrepreneurial zeal persisted. Transforming her grandmother's boarding house in Top Street into a thriving hub of creativity and hospitality, she ventured into accommodation, tourism and culinary arts.

Ever generous, Vena extended her expertise to unemployed youth, offering training in various skills, from crafting to catering. Today, Vena's legacy continues to flourish as she operates her restaurant, catering to events with flair and finesse.
Her story is not just one of business acumen but also of community upliftment and empowerment. Vena embodies the power of perseverance and the boundless possibilities that arise when one dares to chase your dreams.
