WILLOWMORE NEWS - Revive Willowmore, a local non-profit organisation that was founded in 2023 to drive local transformation, keeps sparking fresh energy through community involvement and bold new murals in this small Karoo town.
In June this year, Revive Willowmore tackled one of the town’s biggest eyesores – a neglected building that had stood abandoned for years.
Instead of simply patching it up, they took a creative leap by transforming its side into a work of art.
Since then, more faded walls have been transformed into vibrant artworks, as local businesses not only started supporting the initiative, but also commissioned murals on their own premises at their own expense.
The murals are done by artist Fourie Ackermann from Friemersheim, who has been at the heart of this transformation from the onset.
“His talent for turning blank walls into striking landmarks continues to impress with each new mural, sparking conversation and admiration,” says Veronica du Plessis, co-founder and chairperson of Revive Willowmore.
Du Plessis views the commitment of the local businesses as a strong sign of confidence in the project and in the town’s future.
She also finds the response from local youth equally encouraging.
According to her, two young people have already come forward, eager to take part.
One of them, Con-Roy Booysen, will be painting the school emblems as soon as the schools are ready – another project sponsored by Revive Willowmore.
“Revive Willowmore is looking for the next building to uplift, restore, and brighten up.
We are also scouting for additional artists, near and far, to bring different styles and broaden the artistic landscape of the town,” says Du Plessis.
“These developments are more than cosmetic. Each brushstroke represents community spirit. It tells a story of growth, pride, and possibility in Willowmore.
With every mural, Willowmore moves closer to becoming a destination in its own right – a place visitors will want to experience and a town its residents can be proud of.”
