ABERDEEN NEWS — The three ladies who completed their 21km walk for Aberdeen a few weeks ago have distributed most of the over R15 000 raised, but one project is still ongoing.
R1 300 was designated for a “keep Aberdeen Tidy” project, and so far, after 3.5 days of work, a total of 67 black bags or their equivalent has been collected.
“Botter Ossie” Umelda van Rensburg has been running this part of the project, with help from Jurgens Strydom, and they are thrilled with the success that they have been able to achieve.
Jurgens started last Monday, and employed one person, Collin Vink, to clear Andries Pretorius Street from Volks Delta to the bypass. Eight bags were collected that day.
On Tuesday, just between SSK and the Padstal, 18 bags worth of litter was collected.
The west side of town was targeted on Wednesday, with one man collected 11 bags between Moertoe and the bypass in just five hours, and the other, who worked the full day, clearing a mammoth 17 bags between Aalwynhof and the hospital. On Thursday, one man again collected 13 bags between the tennis courts and the Aberdeen Club.
Umelda’s little Datsun 1200 bakkie has made many valiant trips to the local tip.
Members of the Ward 7 WhatsApp group have been avidly following the progress of the work, with the main theme coming through clearly that if just one man working hard can achieve this much, why can the municipality not “do their bit” with staff who are paid to work?
