GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - In the heart of Sewende Laan, Masizakhe, Graaff-Reinet, a group of compassionate women has come together with the shared vision to bring about positive change in their community.
Their initiative, known as the Lilitha Lethu project, has quickly become a beacon of hope and support for the disadvantaged in the area. Established in 2022 by retired nurse Thandeka Majoka, the project has evolved into a non-profit organisation named the Lilitha Lethu Sacred Place.
While long-term sustainability is her aim, Majoka's fervent desire to give back to her community prompted her to start addressing immediate needs.
The project kicked off with a heart-warming initiative - the collection of second-hand clothing, generously donated by the community members. These clothing items were distributed to the less fortunate in Sewende Laan, eliciting hearfelt gratitude from beneficiaries.
Central to Lilitha Lethu Sacred Place's mission is the commitment to holistic community development. Majoka, now the manager of the project, envisions a future where residents actively participate in creating positive change.
To achieve this, the initiative focuses on practical endeavours, such as assisting community members in establishing backyard vegetable gardens.
Lilitha Lethu Sacred Place has also taken steps to address issues of hunger by setting up a community soup kitchen to provide nutritious meals to those in need.
Emily Swartbooi, Betty Meyers and Emma Stuurman have joined Majoka in this cause, ensuring that the initiative is not only sustainable but capable of reaching more lives.
Majoka emphasises that this is just the beginning – the project is set to be an ongoing endeavour, continually adapting and expanding to meet the needs of the people.
The heart of the initiative lies in the community of Masizakhe, with the soup kitchen currently running from Swartbooi's home in Chris Hani Village.
The localised approach ensures that the impact is direct and immediate, encouraging trust and connection among community members.
