KAROO NEWS - Over 3 600 residents of the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality (BNLM) have petitioned against the salary and tariff increases implemented by the municipality.
In total, 3 688 residents signed the petition, distributed by various stakeholders of the community, including Graaff-Reinet Action Committee, Umasizakhe Water Crisis Committee and Graaff-Reinet Residents’ & Ratepayers’ Association.
The petition forms were counted by Van Wyk Theron, a local accounting firm.
Organisers of the petition now await a response from local mayor, Deon de Vos, to present the petition. A letter confirming the petition will also be sent to CoGTA MEC, Xolile Nqata and the CoGTA Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
“Many thanks to all those who signed the petition,” said Liz Buisman on behalf of the organisers. “The voices of BNLM residents will be heard. Although it appears that the tariffs and salaries for 2020/21 are already determined, this is not cast in stone. The issue is still being pursued.”
