NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS — The Nieu-Bethesda Watch is a newly formed body that is concerned with maintaining a relatively crime-free environment in the village.
Those involved have split into patrol groups who regularly patrol the village and act as the 'eyes and ears' on the ground, then notifying the South African Police service.
Over the Easter weekend, there was no crime reported, a significant difference from numerous petty crimes that had happened during this period in the past.
Local farmer, Pierre Fourie donated a sheep on the spit and the Bethesda Watch group met for a social evening with the local police at the Ramstal pub last week. Everyone brought along a side dish to share and there was many a conversation about the benefits of the watch.
Some patrollers commented on how they enjoyed having a reason to get out at strange hours with their group and to walk around this picturesque town. There were also a few stories about interesting things that were seen in the early hours including an aardvark and an asteroid shower!
A WhatsApp group has been set up so that residents can be alerted to suspicious behaviour and the police are notified simultaneously. The Nieu-Bethesda Watch is an excellent example of a community working together for the benefit of the whole.
