GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A successful open day and pop-up thrift market at the historical Reinet House in Graaff-Reinet drew strong community support on Sunday morning, 14 December.
The Graaff-Reinet Museum’s annual open day, combined with its first-ever pop-up market, proved to be a resounding success, attracting approximately 150 visitors.
Four of the museum’s five sites were open to the public, creating a lively yet relaxed atmosphere.
The event enjoyed particularly strong attendance from members of the community, who visited the museum after attending church services, contributing to a steady flow of visitors throughout the morning.
The positive energy was evident across the museum complex, with families, friends and visitors from outside the town taking time to explore the exhibitions and buildings.
“Among the visitors were Dr Randal Albertus and his family, who travelled from Sasolburg to attend the open day,” said Dr Anziske Kayster, a prominent cultural historian, heritage practitioner, and the manager of the Graaff-Reinet museum.
“Dr Albertus, an environmental scientist with a particular interest in fossils, praised the experience, describing the morning as ‘fantastic’, marked by remarkable history, a peaceful atmosphere and staff who were exceptionally helpful and friendly.
The family enjoyed refreshments from the food stalls at the pop-up market, while young Gabriel showed a keen interest in the Porcupine Quill House located in the basement of Reinet House.”
Kayster said the market was well supported by both visitors and local vendors, encouraging the museum to consider making it a regular feature on its events calendar.
“The Graaff-Reinet Museum extends its sincere thanks to all who attended and supported the open day and pop-up market, and invites the public to save the date for next year’s event and once again join in celebrating our town’s rich heritage,” Kayster said.
