REGIONAL NEWS - The Sarah Baartman District Municipality held its 2025/26 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and budget mayoral outreach at the Alex Laing Hall on Friday 9 May.
The event aimed to present the draft IDP and budget to stakeholders in the Dr Beyers Naudé area to foster collaborative planning and address service delivery concerns.
Different municipal roles
District Mayor Deon de Vos, accompanied by a multidisciplinary team, emphasised that while local municipalities engage directly with communities, the district’s role is to support municipalities and co-ordinate with the provincial government on matters such as disaster management, environmental health, and regional planning.
The district does not deliver services directly but provides support and guidance.
De Vos highlighted the importance of integrated government efforts, ensuring all departments work under one umbrella to deliver effective services.
He acknowledged public concerns not just about municipal services, but also broader government service delivery issues.
In line with the Municipal Systems Act 32 of 2000, the district's role is to build local capacity and support socio-economic upliftment through infrastructure, disaster management, economic development, and environmental health.
Challenges named
Key issues raised included limited budgets, vandalism of government properties (such as at the Fred Hufkie Oval), lack of health services in Kroonvale, poor road infrastructure, youth economic development, SMME support, and overcrowded schools.
Public Works’ Nolusindiso Tyhilo responded that properties identified for disposal are being evaluated, with the process underway since February.
De Vos condemned vandalism, stressing that perpetrators come from the community. He urged stronger law enforcement, noting,
“This is a fight we must face together.”
The municipality also held a two-day strategic planning session where directors were tasked with lobbying for funds to support local municipalities.
