KAROO NEWS - Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) celebrates Maritime Heritage Month this year and visited Graaff-Reinet to inform local grade 9 and 10 learners about the marine industries, career opportunities and bursaries.
It is the first time ever that TNPA hosted a maritime awareness roadshow in Graaff-Reinet.
The roadshow was brought to Spandau Secondary School in Kroonvale last week and three other high schools, Asherville Secondary, Nqweba Secondary and Hoër Volkskool, also attended the event.
Short videos of South African ports were shown and the day-to-day operations were a real eye-opener.
Captain Vuyani Ntsimango, the acting harbour master of the PE Port, said the roadshow aims to inspire learners to explore various career opportunities within the maritime sector.
The programme was directed by former teacher Lindiwe Hina, the TNPA HR officer, who kept learners on their toes with information and questions.
Nombulelo Mdlalo, training and development manager, provided valuable insight into the types of bursaries available and diverse career paths within the maritime field. Students and learners with mathematics and physical science as subjects can explore the official Transnet website at www.transnet.net for more information on how to apply for bursaries and begin their journey in maritime careers.
