KAROO NEWS - The local libraries in Graaff-Reinet held their International Literacy Day local elimination competition on Thursday 1 August at the Kroonvale Library Hall.
International Literacy Day, founded in 1967, is celebrated annually on 8 September to remind the world of the importance of literacy to enhance human dignity and human rights.
The worldwide theme this year is 'Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies'.
The local elimination was in preparation for the district event on 8 August in Paterson in the Sundays River Municipality. Regional librarian, Mzwanele Mjali, says local libraries take part and facilitate the elimination for the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality. "This is a prestigious platform that celebrates literacy and foster a love for reading through a competitive platform. International Literacy Day aims to infuse a culture of reading through its promotion of South African languages."
Schools in the townships and learners participated in different activities in preparation for the district competition.
