GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Laqhama Fula, a Grade 12 learner at Nqweba Secondary School, impressed audiences and judges at the SASCE Choir Competition held in Qonce on 24 May.
Competing as a solo soprano under the Cluster Level, she represented the Sarah Baartman district choirs and secured second place with her performance of "Tornami a vagheggiar" from Alcina by Händel.
Her achievement has earned her a spot at the provincial competition, set to take place in East London from 29 to 30 May.
Laqhama's musical talent appears to run in the family.
Her grandmother, Juzana Nondlazi-Fula, a retired music teacher, expressed pride and joy in her granddaughter's success.
"She has always loved singing - you could hear her voice around the house.
I feel blessed to have grandchildren with such voices," she said, adding that she helped teach them how to read music.
Laqhama's musical journey began in primary school at Thembalesizwe, where one of her former music teachers, Asanele Jubela, first noticed her operatic potential. "Even back then, she showed signs of excelling in classical music, but opera wasn't part of the curriculum," he explained.
"Once she reached secondary school, she truly began to shine."
Jubela also pointed out the challenges faced by students pursuing classical music, such as the need for professional accompaniment and appropriate acoustics.
Despite these obstacles, Laqhama's dedication and talent have led her to this important milestone.
Her school and community are proud of her accomplishments and are rallying behind her as she prepares to perform at the next level in East London this weekend.
